Choosing Adult Chaperones
Your chaperones can help to make your trip easier or, if not chosen carefully, they can make your trip more difficult. From our experience, we have found that too many chaperones can detract from the experience for the children. Sometimes the main emphasis shifts away from the students to socializing with other chaperones. We recommend bringing one teacher or chaperone per eight students attending the trip. Adults over this ratio will be charged at the extra adult rate. Take time to consider the following criteria when selecting your adult chaperones.
Is this person physically fit?
Tremont classes are active and most require some degree of hiking and hill climbing. Hikes vary from 1/4 mile to 8+ miles, depending on the classes you choose. The chaperones must keep up with the students.
Has this person worked with groups of children before?
Taking care of one’s own child is different from supervising a whole group. Different skills are required. Having some adults with previous experience could be helpful. Examples: scouts, school trips, etc.
Does this person want to help out for the right reasons?
Some chaperones may see this as a vacation or as time to spend with their child alone. In reality it will be a lot of work. They will be with the students all day and all night. Make sure they are committed to being on the trip for all of the students and to taking an active role in supervision.
Is this person a positive role model for the whole group?
Is this person going to set a good example in terms of their own values, behavior, appearance, and attitude? For example, interested in students, smoking out of sight, or using appropriate language.
Does this person enjoy the outdoors? Tremont classes are held outdoors, rain or shine. We encourage getting wet and muddy. If the chaperone is not enthusiastic about being outside, he or she will lessen the students’ experience.
Other Helpful Hints
Consider asking potential chaperones to fill out an application if they are interested. This can help you make a well-informed decision about who to choose. Click here to download a sample application. All adults receive a “Teacher and Chaperone Guide” booklet prior to arrival. The guide outlines hints on supervision, packing lists, directions and chaperone duties and responsibilities.
