Environmental Education Summer Intern
Internship Goals
Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont
Description of Goals and Experiences
GOAL: Gain experience in environmental education and nature interpretation, as well as youth programming.
Experiences:
- develop a skills inventory by utilizing environmental education and interpretation references in the resource library
- observe other staff conducting educational programs
- assist a lead programmer with education programs through research and preparation
- research, prepare for, conduct and evaluate educational programs as the lead programmer
- research and develop educational resources (bulletin boards, website development, educational displays, natural
resource management)
GOAL: Gain experience in summer camp operations
Experiences:
- learn and execute camp daily routine (dorm rules, meal procedures, administration of camp schedules, knowledge of all camp activities, evening presentations/activities, knowledge of daily errands and tasks)
- Check-in and Check-out procedures
- carry out routine tasks and procedures
- handle minor and major emergencies
- work as a team member to complete required tasks
GOAL: Gain experience in nonprofit policy and administration
Experiences:
- become familiar with personnel policy through employee handbook
- review Safety and Emergency Protocols
- actively participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings
- utilize policies and procedures on an on-going basis including:
- following GSMIT rules and regulations, observing safety and emergency protocols, use of mission and program goals, and use of all policies contained in the employee handbook
GOAL: Gain experience in natural history and resource managenent
Experiences:
- knowledge of basic natural history of Great Smoky Mountains National Park
- knowledge of the resource through hands-on, direct experience
- knowledge of and assistance with citizen science education projects
- knowledge of and experience in landscaping with native plants
- knowledge of backcountry skills including Leave No Trace principles and trail maintenance
Other Experiences to be provided:
- work with other national park programs (interpretative programs, resource management, science and research)
- participate and assist with adult workshops and college consortia
- experience the overall operation of a nonprofit residential environmental education facility
- develop “soft skills” such as group management, interpersonal communication skills and conflict management
