About Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont
Founded in 1969, Tremont is an environmental education center that provides in-depth experiences through education programs that celebrate ecological and cultural diversity, foster stewardship, and nurture appreciation of Great Smoky Mountains National Park. One of only a handful of residential education partners of the National Park Service nation-wide, we serve over 5,000 students, teachers, and other adults annually in our educational programs. We operate year-round offering overnight school programs, adult workshops, summer youth programs and camps, citizen science projects, and naturalist certification courses. We are seeking an experienced and visionary leader who has the abilities and skills necessary to build on our organization’s past successes and move us forward. Our ideal candidate will have strong non-profit business management skills including fund raising and communications, as well as be a leader in environmental
education. We are seeking a person who will understand and be capable of managing the many facets of a residential environmental learning center working in partnership with the National Park Service.
Description: The Executive Director is responsible for the overall strategic
direction, leadership, and administration of Great Smoky Mountains Institute at
Tremont (GSMIT). Primary responsibilities include working with the board of
directors, Institute staff, and National Park Service partners to create a shared
vision for the future and to provide the leadership for accomplishing strategic
goals. We are looking for an effective communicator who can share the importance
of our mission with a wide variety of constituents. This is a full time position hired
by and directly accountable to the board of directors. As leader of the organization
she/he will model and embody the mission of connecting people and nature in
Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Qualifications: Strongly prefer MS in environmental education or related field
with 8 years (+/-) business experience OR MS in business admin/communications
with 8 years (+/-) in environmental education or related experience. Significant
experience and success with fund raising, program and personnel management,
developing and implementing a budget in excess of $1 million, marketing, strategic
plan implementation, financial management, board and staff development, and
facilities management. Leadership in environmental education and specific knowledge of Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the southern Appalachians is highly desirable.
Salary & Benefits: Commensurate with experience. Full-time salaried with full benefits.
