Families Reach New Summits at Tremont
(Great Smoky Mountains) Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont offers award-winning programs for all ages. One of the more popular programs is helping families reach new summits together. Family programs like “Smoky Mountains Family Camp” and “Fall Family Backpack” bring families together from many areas to enjoy this area’s most memorable family vacations in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Smoky Mountains Family Camp, July 2-7, is a week-long adventure into the heart of the Smokies. “The whole family learns what magical wonders await in the mountains. Children get to go critter hunting with their parents, fun hikes and activities abound as resounding laughter liven up these hills,” states Amber Parker, educational director for Tremont. At Smoky Mountains Family Camp families spend each day immersed in the lush beauty of the mountains while enjoying one of the country’s most popular playgrounds but they also learn what it takes to appreciate this wonderful place. Hiking, tubing the river and night walks are only a few of the activities to enjoy. Hikes are divided into three levels. Each level is defined so that families can choose what hikes best fits them. Each hike is carefully planned so that beautiful vistas can be enjoyed by all. Fourth of July is a special treat as we travel to Townsend to celebrate Independence Day with fireworks.
Fall Family Backpack, October 12-14, is a time when the family can spread out and cover some ground. As you prepare for a trek into the back-country your family will spend an evening sleeping under the stars and enjoy a beautiful dawn with panoramic views. For ages 12 and up it is a time when your family comes in tune with nature.
Both of these programs are increasingly popular because Tremont provides practically everything. Meals are served family style and backpack gear is provided along with instruction and guided hikes. Don’t forget the cool dips in the river and campfire tales and smores!
