Tremont Receives Gift from Tetra Tech

(Great Smoky Mountains National Park) – “Connecting people and nature.” This phrase is used by Ken Voorhis, Executive Director of the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont, to frame the experience young people have enjoyed at the Institute. Since 1969, Tremont programs have encouraged students to explore the outdoors while learning about their environment through hands-on learning experiences within the National Park, focusing on developing in people a greater sense of place, a deepened appreciation and awe for the diversity of life and people, and an ethics of stewardship that follows them home.

Tetra Tech, a leading provider of environmental and engineering services, is providing Tremont with a cash donation and technical expertise in support of the Institute and its programs.

Robert Milazzo, senior vice president and manager of the Tetra Tech Oak Ridge Cost Center, presented a $5,000 donation to Mr. Voorhis to be used for Tremont’s science seeker camp this summer.   In addition, Tetra Tech’s scientists and engineers are supporting Tremont with technology and consulting services such as:  solar panel design; data collection used to update their Web site; uploading data using personal data assistants; and monitoring equipment.

Science Seekers are a part of Tremont’s Discovery Camp, a six-day, five-night residential summer camp for ages 9-12.  This camp is a place to explore nature while getting down and dirty with salamanders, collect insects, experience the awesome power of a waterfall, hike through the wilderness, cool off in the swimming hole and laugh with new friends around the campfire. It is full of firsts for many kids. The first time away from home.  The first overnight trip into a national park.  And the first time this scholarship has been offered.

The science seeker scholarships were offered to 87 students from 12 schools in four states.  Nominated by their teachers, these students have expressed an interest in science and natural history in the classroom and during their school visits to Tremont. These students received a $200 scholarship to attend Tremont’s 2008 Discovery Camp.
