Come Back to Tremont—in your Work Gloves!
Saturday, November 12th, is the annual Volunteer Work Day at Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont. If you are a former participant, have sent your children or students to Tremont, or just interested in supporting the environmental education programs that bring thousands to Tremont each year, you are invited to come to Tremont on Saturday.
“We often have whole families come out to work together, Alongside other volunteers, they all, young and old, help with a myriad of important projects,” said Charlene Stewart, Tremont’s human resources manager and the coordinator of this annual event.
Some of the projects that will be tackled this year are: trail maintenance to multiple trails around campus, removing invasive species plants, chopping firewood, and cleaning the windows of all campus buildings.
“The weather has been very kind to us over the years and it looks as though this Volunteer Day will be another beautiful day to be in the national park,” said Ken Voorhis, executive director. “It’s a fun day and since many of those participating have been to Tremont for one of our programs, we have a great time swapping stories over lunch once our work is done.
“These workdays are a great opportunity to get families outside and working together, as well as a great way to spend time with old friends and meet new ones,” Voorhis continued.
Tremont has volunteer opportunities year-round, and all skill levels are needed and appreciated. You can help in many different areas--from participating in scientific studies, greeting park visitors in the gift shop, trail maintenance, to landscaping, or even kitchen projects.
