A backpacker lay halfway down the steep slope. Face down, his backpack hiding his head, and his legs tangled in rhododendron, he is unnaturally still. Blood stains his side and pools beneath his body. Six hikers crest the ridge and spot him. "We’ve got a man down over here! He’s bleeding!" one yells, excitedly. The entire group reacts, looking, evaluating the scene and then moves, as one, down the steep grade. Another first responder training scenario has begun...

Do you know how to respond to backcountry emergency situations? Anyone interested in the wilderness or in emergency medical training will benefit from this course. Instructors from Roane State Community College will lead the program. The curriculum will meet the Tennessee Dept. of Transportation's standards for First Responder while focusing on the special situations that may develop in the wilderness. Participants will be eligible for national registry and state testing upon completion of this program. Program lasts from Sunday evening to the following Sunday afternoon.
Cost: $820. Lodging, and meals included in cost. There will be an additional
fee to purchase text books. Limited financial aid is available from the Louise Barber endowment. To apply for aid send us a letter stating why the course would benefit you, why you need financial assistance and the amount you are requesting.
All participants must have completed Professional Level CPR before attending, or CPR for the Healthcare Provider. Either American Heart Association or Red Cross standards are sufficient.
Please bring 2 sets of clothing that can be destroyed in scenario training.

Participants will be eligible for national registry and the state testing upon completion of the program. As of this year, testing is only offered at approved testing centers located in cities throughout the U.S. The cost of the national registry test is $65. Roane State is NOT a testing center.

Curriculum will meet the TN EMS standards and national standards for First Responder training
Certification is good for 2 years.

FINANCIAL AID AVAILABLE
Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont offers financial aid for Wilderness First Responder through the Louise Barber Endowment. Financial aid applicants do not need to pay a deposit. To apply for aid please send us a letter stating:
(1) why the course would benefit them
(2) why they need financial assistance
(3) the amount they are requesting
Recipients of financial aid will be notified by the beginning of the year regarding how much they were awarded. A place will be held for financial aid applicants, pending award announcement. At that time the full balance is due.

If you have taken Wilderness First Responder in the past and are due for a renewal, this program will satisfy the requirements to renew certification in First Responder on the national registry. This program is also an excellent review of wilderness medical information and skills. Limited enrollment! Program lasts from Friday morning to Sunday afternoon.
