Learn why your school's visit to Tremont will be "more than just a field trip."
The Eastern Hellbender is the largest salamander in North America, with some adults measuring over
two feet long! We are helping Dr. Michael Freake, a scientist from Lee University, monitor hellbender populations in the Smokies. In the summer, students snorkel in the rivers in search of these rather elusive creatures, and then help measure and tag any that are caught for a mark-release-recapture study.
