Monarch Butterfly Tagging and Migration Study in Cades Cove

Well-known for their long-distance migration to Mexico, monarchs are one of the most famous insects in North America. Much of their biology, however, remains a mystery. This project helps build our knowledge of the monarch migration through a mark-release-recapture study. Students use nets to capture monarchs, tag them with tiny stickers, and record several measurements. They also identify other butterflies in the habitat and flowers in bloom.
