Moth Inventory and Monitoring
If you think of moths as small, brown, and uninteresting, you’ve never had a look at the Tremont moth collection! Since 1998, we have assisted the park in identifying what species of moths exist here and what times of year they are flying. We can also track the relative abundance of the moth populations at Tremont. Our unique methods involve a refrigerator with a UV light attached placed outdoors. In the morning, students bring the trap in and identify, count, and release the moths captured. Thus far, approximately 700 moths have been identified at Tremont; ~120 of these are new park records. |
