Winter Stonefly Inventory

There are some unusual species of stoneflies that emerge in winter, and they are of special interest to All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory (ATBI) scientists. To collect them, we use a stick to tap branches of trees and shrubs along streams and a kite-shaped piece of canvas called a beat sheet to catch any insects that fall of the plants. Students are involved in collecting the insects and marking their locations with a GPS unit.
