This site provides a key to identifying common trees found in GSMNP. Using a key can help in not only identification but in understanding and observing the characteristics by which trees are grouped. This site is under construction and will be updated and expanded upon over time. In winter when there are no leaves the tree key in winter is a great guide to use.

HOW TO USE THE KEY - Start with this page and choose one of the following links below as to whether the tree is deciduous or evergreen. At each link you will be given at least two choices of where to go next. Always read each of the descriptions and or view pictures and choose the one that is MOST TRUE. It is important to look at the tree, leaves etc. in several places to make your decision. If you feel like you are lost or misdirected by your answers use the back button to return to where you were confident of your choice of options and go from there.
